Mount Si golfers coming along after back-to-back wins

When winning hasn’t seemed a possibility, the Mount Si girls golf team has focused on getting better this spring.
Thanks to getting better, the Wildcats are now winning.
Mount Si picked up a pair of wins against Liberty and Sammamish in the last week, brightening what so far had been an adventurous season. With as many as three freshmen at times in the starting lineup, the Wildcats have taken their lumps, but are starting to pick up speed.
“All of the girls except for two are new to the team. But they’re improving, which is what we strive for,” head coach Mike Johnston said. “It hasn’t come as quickly as I’d hoped, because the girls have other things going on in their lives.”
Monday at Maplewood Golf Course, Mount Si scored a 267 to topple Liberty’s 297. Katie Sommers, as she has much of the spring, won medalist honors. Her one-over-par 37 was 10 shots better than teammate Jen Sanford, who finished runner-up.
That finish was identical to a match against Sammamish last week. Somers again had a one-over-par with a 36 to win medalist honors, while Sanford was second with a 47. Mount Si had 255, while Sammamish finished with 292.
Somers and Sanford have been solid all season, but since they are each seniors, it’s important to the program that the younger players improve. Even though players like Maggie Robinson, Julia Dorn and Delaney Bullinger are each freshmen, they could have to fill big shoes soon.
“They’re coming along. Some of them came in with absolutely no skills. Some of them hadn’t picked up a club since they were little,” Johnston said. “We have things to work on. The girls need to get more consistent in parts of their games.”
Fortunately, the Wildcats have seen some quality courses this season. They played on a tough Tam O’Shanter early in the season and practice once a week at the TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge.
They are scheduled to have a match with Newport today, before competing in the league tournament May 6 at Snohomish. The district tourney, scheduled for May 12, will be in Riverbend.
