Wildcats battle for league positioning
The most important week of the regular season for Larry White and the Mount Si softball team began with an unwanted phone call.
It was Bellevue High School on Monday morning, canceling yet another game due to rain.
In what is scheduled to be the final week of the regular season, the Wildcats find themselves in a three-way battle for third place in KingCo 3A with Skyline and Liberty. So much could still happen because, as of Tuesday – when Mount Si was scheduled to play at Sammamish – the Wildcats had played just 10 games.
That means they’ll find themselves on the diamond a lot this week, playing contests that will go a long way to determine their postseason fate.
“Our last game was supposed to be Thursday and we still have five games left,” White said Monday. “I’m just hoping to try and emphasize to our girls that we have to take care of business this week.”
The plan was for Mount Si to play at Sammamish Tuesday, make up a doubleheader at Bellevue Wednesday, play host to Interlake today and Skyline Friday. The Interlake game is Senior Day.
If it rains some more, the Wildcats will be forced to try and fit games in over the weekend, or perhaps Monday. They have to find some time to do it, because the league tournament is scheduled to begin next week.
Regardless, it appears that at some point Mount Si will be fitting a lot of innings into a short amount of hours.
“I’m not too worried about it,” said Katie Brett, who will be pitching those games. “I’m so used to select, where we’ll play six games in one weekend, so I think it’ll be okay.
“Our chances are pretty good in these games this week. I think a lot of it might come down to that Skyline game.”
As of Tuesday, Skyline and Liberty were tied for third place at 8-6 in the league. Mount Si was in fifth at 5-5. The top six teams in KingCo 3A all advance to the league tournament.
Counting Bellevue twice because of a scheduled doubleheader, the Wildcats’ opponents this week were a combined 21-47 on Tuesday. That bodes well for Mount Si’s chances of moving up in the league standings.
“(Liberty, Skyline and Mount Si) are all in, it’s just a matter of whether we’re going to be three, four or five,” White said. “We expect to see plenty of them from here on out, because we’ll probably see them in the league tournament too.”
Mount Si has beaten Liberty twice this season, but fell to Skyline 7-4 earlier.
