Snoqualmie Library receives building award

When the Snoqualmie Library was constructed in August of 2007, builders wanted to do more than simply make it attractive. They wanted to be efficient, responsible and organized in their construction.

As a result, the Snoqualmie Library has recived a 2008 Build Washington Award from the AGC, a trade association that represents and provides services to the commercial construction industry.

Representatives from the King County Library System, BNBuilders and Miller-Hull Partnership - the architects for the library - were honored at an awards presentation at the Seattle Art Museum May 21.

“The library system has a tradition of high-quality buildings,” said King County Library System Director Bill Ptacek. “We are glad this generation of library buildings is standing up to the tradition.”

The 6,000-square-foot library was the first of five built with a $172 million capital bond, approved by voters in 2004. The other four, all of which were or are being constructed by BNBuilding, are in Fall City, Carnation, Maple Valley and on the Mukilshoot reservation.

The Snoqualmie Library was a $4 million project. It was selected for award in the category of public buildings, costing less than $5 million. A panel of five judges from across the state voted.

“We have a lot of people apply,” said Liz Evans, AGC Northern District Manager. “We start out with a pretty big pool.”

The factors which helped the Snoqualmie Library win included the timeliness in which it was built, its collaborative construction effort and the use of Building Information Software, which creates a digital representation of the building process to stimulate real-world performance.

“The judges really liked the use of technology in the project,” Evans said. “The reason that technology is so important is because it allows the team to visualize the details, so it brings in a more integrated approach to the building.”
