Alan Gothelf, right, is greeted as the newest members of the North Bend City Council.

Alan Gothelf, a 46-year-old businessman and former city planning commissioner, was appointed to the North Bend City Council last week.

Mayor Ken Hearing swore Gothelf in to finish the unexpired term of former Councilman Chris Garcia, who resigned in March.

Gothelf, an eight-year resident of North Bend, is the owner of Hobbytown USA in Redmond, and is affiliated with Pro-Flooring LLC, in North Bend.

Gothelf said the appointment will allow him to “continue the efforts I’ve been working on with the Planning Commission,” namely to guide good residential and commercial growth within the city.

“The revenue growth must be maintained to provide good infrastructure,” Gothelf said in a telephone interview.

“But we must also have good commercial growth to provide jobs for people who want to work in the city.”

Gothelf said he is supportive of recent city efforts to protect local residents from potential adverse impacts resulting from the Snoqualmie Casino, which is poised to open its doors in November.

In recent months, the council has amended its zoning regulations limiting where certain types of businesses can locate, and last week, barred any establishment choosing to operate casual card games.

“It’s important that we make sure the impact from the casino is minimal,” he said. “Other cities have had to do similar type things.”

Prior to his appointment to the council, Gothelf had served 18 months on the Planning Commission.

He and wife, Esther, are parents of two daughters, Mara, 9 and Ashley, 4.
