Katie Somers didn’t need a whole lot of practice to get ready for Shuksan Golf Course in Bellingham.

But she did need the rain to stop.

The Mount Si senior took fifth place at the Class 3A state tournament May 21, shooting three shots better during a dry final round than she did during a wet opening round.

It was Somers’ fourth top-10 state finish in her career and third top-five.

“When it starts to rain, it gets in my head a little bit. So, I think I did pretty good, considering the conditions,” she said. “I shot pretty well (in the final round), but Tuesday wasn’t much fun.”

Somers had an 80-77 - 157, finishing nine shots back of medalist Kristin Tan of Holy Names Academy.

Somers was second at state both as a freshman and last spring as a junior.

She started the tournament with her worst nine-hole score - a 41 on the opening-round front nine. For those same nine holes the following day, she had a 37. In fact, she was five shots better on the first five holes than she was in the opening round.

In general, the score was pretty remarkable, considering Somers played the course for the first time just two days before the start of the tournament.

“The first time was Sunday morning, then I came back and played it once on Monday,” she said. “I didn’t think the course was too tough, but I started out kind of jumpy because I was so excited to play. I controlled myself a lot better today, especially early on.”

Somers recorded birdies on holes 6, 8 and 15 the opening round and on holes 5 and 13 the final round.

Tan won medalist honors by shooting 74 both days for a 148. She clipped Mount Rainier’s Stephanie Corey by just three shots. Defending state champion Brittany Tallman from Issaquah - who topped

Somers by nine shots last spring to win the title - was tied with Tan for first place going into the final round, before settling for third with a 153.

Somers was the only Mount Si golfer competing. She was one of just five players who finished the two rounds with a combined score of less than 160.

Class 3A boys

In boys action at Bellingham Country Club, Mount Si’s Bradley Harrelson placed 16th with a 76-74 -

150. He was just three shots off the top 10 and 11 shots removed from medalist Matt Rawitzer from Squalicum.

Wildcat teammate Jack Kelley also made the cut for the final round and placed 30th with a 77-79 - 156.

Rawitzer was tied with Daniel Snoey after the two each posted 69s in the opening round. Rawitzer came

back the next day with a 70 for a 139, while Snoey ended up fourth after a final-round 75.

Everyone in the top 10 of the boys competition shot at least 147 or better.
