When the backups of injured starters get injured themselves, it becomes a daunting task to put notches in the win column.
Still, the Mount Si volleyball team has found a way.
Competing as somewhat of a rag-tag crew, the Wildcats posted a 3-0 win against Bellevue Monday night at home. The win improves Mount Si to 4-2 in league play, keeping the Wildcats in the hunt for the conference crown.
In the week leading up to the victory, Mount Si had been forced to call on its bench to fill in for injured veterans. When those new starters went down, the Wildcats found themselves scrambling for more new faces.
But Mount Si still made quick work of Bellevue, winning 25-8, 25-16, 25-19. Miranda Pratt had 12 kills, six assists and eight digs, while Robyn Schirmer finished with 26 assists, Mackenzie Peerboom had six kills, Bethany Frieler had 13 digs and Aubrey Larion six kills, two assists and five digs.
The team was missing sophomore Amanda Gates (elbow), sophomore Paige Dahlberg (back) and junior Shelagh Macaulay (arm). They were each scheduled to get an update on their playing status this week.
Freshman Sarah McDonald filled in at middle blocker against Bellevue, while sophomore Kylee Jacobs also got a start.
“We played very well. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but we came out and passed the ball well and hit the ball well,” Mount Si head coach Bonnie Foote said. “I think this last weekend really turned a corner for us.”
Over the weekend, the Wildcats split four matches at a tournament at Bellevue Community College. They defeated Juanita and Holy Names, while Newport and Enumclaw each beat them. Pratt was runner-up for tournament MVP honors.
Monday’s win helped Mount Si remain third in KingCo 4A/2A and remain in the hunt for the league championship.
“We needed to win,” Foote said. “We need to win the rest of our games, if we want to still contend for the league title.”
