Forest service offers Christmas trees

Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has just the thing for those who want to get in the Christmas spirit, but don’t want to go broke doing it.
Until Dec. 24, the national forest is offering citizens a chance to retrieve their own Christmas trees at a rate significantly less than they’d find at commercial tree farms.

Those who don’t want to purchase a Christmas tree at commercial farms like this one have an option this holiday season.

Boxing coming to Snoqualmie Casino

Fight Night has come to the Valley.
For its first-ever scheduled boxing match, Snoqualmie Casino announced last week that it will welcome undisputed junior middleweight world champion Winky Wright Dec. 4 at the casino’s ballroom. Wright will face Michi Munoz in a 10-round super middleweight bout, which is scheduled to air live on VERSUS at 5 p.m. A televised co-feature and under card are to be announced at a later date.
Volleyball team ousted at state tournament

The Mount Si volleyball team won one and lost two in taking an early exit at the Class 3A state volleyball tournament Nov. 20 in Kennewick.
The Wildcats, who were making their second consecutive state appearance, started off the tournament with a grueling 3-2 loss to Lakes. Twice in the match, Mount Si fell down a set, but bounced back to even it up. Finally, Lakes was able to take the match by winning 15-9 in the fifth.
Robyn Schirmer recorded 45 assists and 12 digs in the defeat, while Bethany Frieler had 28 digs and Miranda Pratt 31 kills and 14 digs.
The Wildcats came back and staved off elimination with a 3-1 victory against Auburn Mountainview. Mount Si won the first set 28-26, then captured wins in the second and fourth sets to advance. Pratt again had a huge match, notching 31 kills, 13 digs and six aces, while Zoe Gogan had eight kills and six blocks and Frieler 24 digs and four aces.
A win away from being able to place, the Wildcats then lost to Kennedy, 3-1. Pratt had 18 kills and 10 digs, while Schirmer finished with 28 assists and Gogan added 15 kills. Read more

School district funding fifth lowest in state

At a public education series, Kelly Munn was blunt about the amount of funding Snoqualmie Valley schools receive from the state.

Grocery store opens on Ridge

Following a ribbon cutting the evening of Nov. 18, The Ridge Supermarket is open for business.
The Myers Group, which took only two weeks to remodel and restock the store, moved in after Village Foods IGA moved out. The new store has goods ranging from groceries to vacuum cleaners.

Principal gets to be ‘King for a Day’

If radio station 94.1 KMPS staff were to write a country song about Tim Nootenboom — principal of Cascade View Elementary School — they would write about how he knows the first, last and sometimes middle names of about 680 children.
Instead of writing a song, the radio station awarded him “King for a Day,” a monthly honor bestowed upon local people their listeners admire.
