Valley drives garner a lot of support

December 26, 2008

When called upon, Snoqualmie Valley stepped up to the plate, hitting home runs for toy drives, food banks and coat collections for those in need this winter.

Donna Padilla, the North Bend organizer of Baker’s Angels, added seven new bakers to her fold after locals recently learned about her team of kitchen wizards that baked treats for wounded soldiers.

Students learn the highs and lows of trading

December 26, 2008

Economists may not have much faith in the current state of the stock market, but a group of seventh-graders at Snoqualmie Middle School doesn’t seem to mind.

As tumbling stock prices sent shockwaves through the country’s financial sector, Justin Talmadge’s seventh-grade classes at SMS dove headfirst into the market, recently purchasing up to $50,000 worth of imaginary stock.

Sandy Chang, Bradley Christensen and Justin Talmadge spare a moment from their stock market trading. All of Talmadge’s social studies students traded virtual stocks online.

Snoqualmie seeks outside help with snow

December 24, 2008

The snow is piling up so fast in Snoqualmie that city workers are running out to places to put it.

On Monday, Dec. 22, the lanes of the Snoqualmie Parkway were lined with snow drifts and piles created by the snow removal operations. Public Works Operations Supervisor Mike Roy said that the snow plows were having problems moving the piles, some of which were five feet deep with snow.

Amnesty International students visit California

December 24, 2008

Seven members of the Amnesty International club attended the 2008 Western Regional Conference in Pasadena, Calif. and returned with ideas of how to energize their classmates.

Junior Craig Hauser started the club last fall after it had fallen by the wayside for several years. Since then, the club’s starting attendance of eight has skyrocketed to about 40 participants who meet after school in Bill Dillon’s room every Monday.
