After taking a trip out of state, the Mount Si boys basketball team had no problem picking up right where it left off and dropping Bishop Blanchet, 76-70, on Jan. 3.
The win makes the Wildcats, who lost their first two games of the season at the Surf N Slam Tournament in San Diego, 5-2 overall.
Tanner Riley led Mount Si in the beating of Bishop Blanchet with 27 points. He was one of four Wildcats in double figures, as Dallas Smith scored 16, Zander Nelson 14 and Tyson Riley 10. The game was tied at 54-all going into the fourth period, when Mount Si erupted for 22 points to capture the win.
The Wildcats began the Surf N Slam with a 71-64 win against Mission Bay (Calif.). Tanner Riley had 26 points in that one, while Lucas Zupan chipped in 19 and Smith 15.
From there, Mount Si dropped its next two games – its first two losses of the season. First, there was an 85-74 overtime loss to Woodcreek (Calif.), despite 33 points from Tanner Riley and another 17 from Nelson. The Wildcats roared from 16 points down in the fourth period to force an extra session, before getting outscored 16-5 in the overtime period.
Mount Si then lost to University City (Calif.), 69-57, and placed fourth in the Surf Division. Playing without Tanner Riley, the Wildcats were held to their lowest point total of the season. They still led by four points going into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 23-7 in the final frame. Nelson led the way with 23 points, while Smith added 22.
Mount Si girls hit losing streak
The Mount Si girls basketball team had a tough holiday break, losing three games at the NIC Christmas Tournament in Idaho, then coming back home and dropping a one-point decision to Inglemoor.
The NIC Tournament started with a 75-48 defeat to Lewiston (Idaho). The Wildcats trailed by just nine points at halftime, but Lewiston pulled away with a strong second-half offensive effort. Catie Richards led Mount Si with 11 points, while Aubrey Larion had nine and Hailey Eddings eight.
The next day, the Wildcats fell behind Post Falls (Idaho) by 11 points in the first quarter and went on to lose, 65-43. Richards had 15 points in that one, while freshman Sarah McDonald poured in seven.
Mount Si’s final game of the tournament was a 68-31 loss to Lake City. Larion led the team with seven points in the defeat.
The Wildcats then returned home and lost a tough 42-41 decision to Inglemoor on Jan. 2. Mount Si rallied from down 11 points in the fourth quarter to make it close. Richards and Jordyn Wilson each scored nine points to lead the way for the Wildcats, while Eddings had eight.
Both the boys and girls teams from Mount Si are scheduled to return to league play this week. They will each travel to Juanita Friday, before continuing KingCo play next week by playing host to Interlake.
As of press time, the Mount Si boys were 2-0 in league play, while the girls were 1-1.
