Sipping hot chocolate with generous dollops of whipped cream, Snoqualmie Middle School students hammered, framed and taped their artwork to the white walls of Isadora’s Bookstore & Cafe in Snoqualmie on Jan. 5.

Snoqualmie Middle School students, from left, Terra Asper, Leanne Schneider, Gwen Schneider, Uyen Lam and Alex Allie take a break from hanging up their artwork at Isadora’s Bookstore & Cafe in Snoqualmie.
A reception will be held at Isadora’s Bookstore & Cafe, 8062 Railroad Ave. S.E. Snoqualmie from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 22. Last year, the group collected about $450 for a school in Uganda by selling their artwork at Isadora’s. This year, the art club plans to donate any money they earn to a local non-profit.
Patrons can buy the artwork for as much or as little as they please. In the past, works have sold between $10 and $150.
“We generated a lot of money through a couple sales,” said Snoqualmie Middle School teacher Ruth Huschle.
The show’s theme, winter wonderland, inspired artists to paint pictures of snowflakes, snow-covered trees and even a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows.
For the past three years, Huschle has arranged for the art club to display its artwork on the walls of Isadora’s to help the community see the talent of its middle-school students. The show also gives students professional experience hanging and displaying their art in a public area. Huschle told students to make sure their artwork was level before they drove the nails into the wall.
“I can do it, but you guys need to have a say in how you want to put it together,” Huschle said to a group of five students. Normally, about 20 students attend the weekly art club meetings.
Students wishing to join the group can meet in Huschle’s art room from 2:20-4:15 p.m. every Tuesday.
Seventh-grade student Uyen Lam painted Mochi ice cream creatures into her winterscape. During art club meetings, Lam said students chat with one another and learn about art elements like lines, colors and shades.
This is the first time she has had her art on public display.
“I think it’s kind of exciting,” Lam said.
“I think it’s cool we get to have our art on display for sale, because it’s cool to show the community what we can do,” sixth-grader Gwen Schneider said.
Any artist can showcase work at Isadora’s, said owner Jody Sands. She bought the store from Kris Coffing in December and plans to continue the tradition of displaying local art in one-month increments. Isadora’s recently showcased reindeers painted by Fall City Elementary’s third-grade students and the art of local artist Michael McDevitt.
Artists can contact Sands at 888-1345 — but they’ll have to be patient when waiting for their turn. The art wall is booked through November 2010.
“There is so much talent in this Valley it’s amazing,” Sands said.
