The Snoqualmie Valley Friends of the Performing Arts will host an open meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Mount Si High School commons area. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce interested Valley residents with the newly formed performing arts group, Friends of the Performing Arts. Those with an appreciation for music, dance and drama are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Thomas Tilton at 831-8114.
Bruce Meyers the Magician will perform for the January Family Event from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at Si View Community Center. Meyers mixes comedy into his magical performance, which he does routinely across the Pacific Northwest.
The Land and People Management Committee, a sub-group of the Upper Snoqualmie Valley Elk Management Group, will meet for the first time at 5 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Snoqualmie Fire Station. All those interested in working on and developing land use and elk habitat policy recommendations should attend. The meeting will set goals and priorities for the committee, as well as select a committee chairperson.
The Friends of the Snoqualmie Library invite residents to a meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Snoqualmie Library to discuss support of the library’s existing programs and goals for 2009. For more information, call 292-0315.
Another square dance event will take place from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 23 at Cascade View Elementary School. The dance is for beginners, as well as experienced dancers. Square dance caller Cliff Nichols will teach and lead. Casual clothes and comfortable shoes are encouraged. There is a suggested donation of $7 for adults and $3 for those age 18 and under. Cascade Elementary School is located at 334816 SE Ridge St., in the Snoqualmie Ridge neighborhood. The dance is sponsored by the event organizers, not by Cascade Elementary School. Sno-Valley Indoor Playground will host its annual Snoqualmie Valley Preschool Education and Enrichment Fair from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Mount Si High School commons area. The fair is an annual free event that seeks to expose Valley families to preschools, enrichment programs, day care facilities and other services for children 5 and under.

The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program meets at Si View Park from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. every Monday through Thursday. Cost is $4.
Volunteer Opportunities
The Snoqualmie Sister Cities Association is seeking host families for 12 foreign exchange students traveling from Gangjin, South Korea. The ninth-grade students will attend Mount Si High School and will need accommodations from Jan. 9 to Feb. 26. The Senior Services Transportation Program seeks volunteers to drive seniors around North Bend and Snoqualmie. Volunteers will drive their own vehicles and choose the weekdays, times and areas in which they’d like to drive. Mileage reimbursement and supplemental liability insurance are offered. The Mount Si Senior Center thrift store is looking for volunteers to sort donations and help with cash sales a few hours a week. The thrift store is located in the Senior Center at 411 Main Street in North Bend. For more information, call Janet at 888-3434.
Hopelink in the Snoqualmie Valley is seeking volunteers for a variety of tasks. The group needs someone to assist with distributing food to clients on the first and third Thursday of the month from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7 p.m.; someone to answer phones and direct calls at the reception desk on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; someone to pick up and deliver donated food from area grocery stores to the Hopelink center in Carnation; someone to sort and organize clothing at the clothing bank; and someone to maintain garden beds around the center. The city of Snoqualmie is looking for men and women who are willing to serve their community as volunteer members of the fire department. As EMS volunteers, those willing would respond to all EMS aid calls when they are available. To be considered, applicants must be at least 21 years old, live within 10 minutes of the city and pass a basic entrance exam. The King County EMT Academy student test will be Jan. 27, training will begin Feb. 24 and the final state exam will be May 19. Classes and practicals are held on Tuesday evenings and all day Saturday. Anyone interested can stop by the fire station at 37600 SE Snoqualmie Parkway or call 888-1551.
Adopt-A-Park with yourself, your family, neighbors or club. Adopt-A-Park is a volunteer program for Snoqualmie residents willing to help improve and enhance public parks and trails. Volunteering requires an application and a one-year commitment. Call 831-5784.
Be a Study Zone tutor and give students the homework help they need. Study Zone needs volunteers to tutor elementary through high school students in math, science, English, social studies and study methods. A two-hour weekly commitment and flexible substitute scheduling are available. The Study Zone program is a free service offered by the King County Library System. For more information, call 369-3312.

The North Bend Library began its Tuesday Book Group last month with a discussion of Water For Elephants, by Sara Gruen. The book group is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month in the North Bend Library Meeting Room. The group is putting together a booklist for 2009. A Brief History of American Quilting: 1800 to the Present will be from 10-11:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at the North Bend Library. Art historian Susan Olds will give a slide lecture presenting various quilt types and patterns made popular by early American quilters. The development of American quilt styles will be traced from the appliquéd coverlets of the early 18th century to the proliferation of pierced quilts from the 1840s to the present. Learn about the various types of quilts, including story friendship and album quilts, as well as the different techniques used in stripped, appliquéd, pieced, hand-tied and crazy quilts. A knitting/book-listening group will meet at 1 p.m. Jan. 8 at the library. The group will listen to knitting genre and other fiction, while preparing a project that is to be raffled off later in the year.
