Hospital district’s move could be a healthy one
January 27, 2009
Editorial:
King County Hospital District No. 4 is still a considerable distance from solving all of its location problems, but the district appears to be headed in the right direction.
The hospital recently announced that it has a contract to purchase land on the west side of Snoqualmie Parkway, just north of Interstate 90. The land will be used as the site for a new $50 million hospital. Read more

School board meeting addresses calendar
January 27, 2009
At a busy Snoqualmie Valley School Board meeting Jan. 22, the board straightened out the school calendar, decided to move forward with a long-term facilities task force addressing crowding in the school district and heard an update about funds for flood damage.
The calendar decision put an end to questions concerning the eight school days recently lost to inclement weather. Curriculum Director Don McConkey presented on behalf of the District Calendar Committee, which is comprised of district staff and leadership from the Snoqualmie teacher’s union and administrative secretaries association. Food bank coordinator honored as Citizen of the Year
January 27, 2009
North Bend Mayor Ken Hearing presented the Citizen of the Year award to Gail Gergasko at the Jan. 20 City Council meeting.
Gergasko is the coordinator of the Mt. Si Helping Hands Food Bank.
Hearing cited Gergasko’s efforts to expand the food bank from 950 to 1,450 square feet as one of the reasons she was chosen as Citizen of the Year. The effort began in 2007. Gergasko helped to raise $90,000 for the expansion project. She also worked with an audio-visual class at Mt. Si High School to create a video to promote the food bank expansion. Read more
Mount Si grads attend inauguration
January 27, 2009
In spite of the freezing temperatures and the pell-mell crowd in Washington, D.C. Jan. 20, people were on their best behavior.
At least that’s what Natalie Edwards — who was there to see President Barack Obama take the oath of office — said.
“Everybody was pretty patient with each other,” said Edwards, a 1995 graduate of Mount Si High School. “They said, ‘Excuse me, pardon.’ There were actually manners.” Read more

Wildcats hold off scrappy Liberty squad
January 27, 2009
It took just four minutes to turn the season around.
Fresh off a pair of frustrating league losses, the Mount Si boys basketball team once again found itself in a trouble spot Jan. 23 at Liberty. But a 14-0 run in the second half broke open a tie game and led to a 72-51 Wildcat victory.
Junior Tanner Riley led all scorers with 35 points, 20 of which came before halftime.
As a result of the win, Mount Si moved to 7-5 overall — and kept itself breathing in the league.

Mount Si’s Taylor Campbell muscles his way in against Liberty Jan. 23.

Mount Si wrestlers squeeze by Eastlake
January 27, 2009
Seven wins, including four by way of fall, were just enough for the Mount Si wrestling team at Eastlake Jan. 22.
The Wildcats picked up falls from Dan Peterson, Ben Larson, Shane Dixon and Doc Derwin, before holding off a late surge by the Wolves to post a 36-33 dual victory. Even though it was close, Mount Si still wasn’t feeling too fortunate — not after losing by a single point just one day earlier.
The Wildcats were, however, feeling grateful about getting a win.

Doc Derwin goes for the pin in the 189-pound match against Eastlake on Jan. 22. Derwin earned his pin and the Wildcats defeated the Wolves, 36-33.
