Riley carries Wildcats past Mercer Island

February 19, 2009

Once Tanner Riley found his stride, it was only a matter of time before the Mount Si boys basketball team found itself in the KingCo 3A/2A championship game.

Thursday afternoon at Bellevue Community College, Riley scored a game-high 33 points to lead his Wildcats to a 49-40 win against Mercer Island and into the league tournament finals.

The junior guard scored 25 of his points in the second half – which was all but four of his team’s points in the half – to help erase a two-point halftime deficit.

He did it against a variety of defenses, too – a man-to-man, a zone, even a box-and-one. But none of it mattered.

“He hits a couple and he catches fire pretty quick,” Mount Si head coach Jeff D’Ambrosio said. “Then it’s just a mater of how many plays, how many looks can we get him when he’s hot.”

Mount Si will play the winner of a Bellevue vs. Juanita matchup at 6:30 p.m. Friday for the tournament championship.

Craig Husa takes Snoqualmie board seat

February 19, 2009

The Snoqualmie Valley School Board has appointed Fall City resident Craig Husa to fill the seat for District No. 3, a position representing part of Snoqualmie and Fall City.

Kathryn Lerner, who held the post for a year, resigned in January citing both professional and personal reasons for leaving.

At a Feb. 10 special board meeting, the school board interviewed Husa, in addition to three other candidates — Kevin Bardsley, Cliff Brown and John Lindberg — at a public meeting.

County Council discusses flooding with Valley

February 19, 2009

More than 200 people gathered at Tolt Middle School in Carnation Feb. 11 to listen to members of the King County Council and others discuss the county’s response to January flooding in the Valley.

The council members took questions from the audience and heard presentations from county staff from the water and land resources division, the emergency management division, and the road maintenance section. A member of the agricultural commission and a local organic farmer also presented information to the crowd about the flood’s impact on farming in the valley.

A dead salmon washed onto a road and farm fields strewn with river stones and other scenes from the disastrous flood were projected above the stage where the council and the presenters sat. Read more

Broadhurst school district transfer denied

February 17, 2009

Redmond’s Broadhurst neighborhood will stay in the Snoqualmie Valley School District, for now.

At a negotiation hearing open to the public Feb. 11, superintendents and two board members from the Lake Washington School District and Snoqualmie Valley School District met to review the neighborhood’s petition and facts regarding the transfer request.

In the petition, which was signed by 96 percent of Broadhurst residents, the majority of the neighborhood alleged Snoqualmie Valley schools were farther away, the roads traveled to get there more dangerous and lacking in academics, sports and clubs, compared to Lake Washington schools. Many of the residents said these factors created a fractured community, since many students ended up acquiring variances to LWSD, attending private or home school or moving to another neighborhood. Wildcats send entire team to the Class 3A state championships

Mount Si’s gymnasts are going to the state championships — all of them.

For the first time in school history, the Wildcats qualified the entire team for the state meet, thanks to a second-place finish at a Class 3A district at Sammamish High School Feb. 14.

Mount Si finished with 162.85 points, right behind district champion Bainbridge’s 167.125. Only the top three teams moved on.

Wildcats enter league tournament on a streak

February 16, 2009

A coin toss may have made it official, but luck had little to do with the Mount Si girls basketball team finishing third in the league.

What could take credit is a remarkably improbable finish to the regular season.

After spending the first half of the league schedule in the cellar of KingCo 3A/2A, the Wildcats won their final six games to finish 8-4. The capper came Feb. 12 when Mount Si toppled Mercer Island, a team that had lost just once in league play and already had locked up first place.

Catie Richards led all scorers with 18 points in 57-47 victory.
