Relay for Life as worthy a cause as ever

It may seem a bit early to be thinking about camping in summer, but not if it’s for the Snoqualmie Valley Relay for Life.

Just 107 days remain until the annual event — which benefits the American Cancer Society — and many fundraising efforts are already under way.

Each year, the fundraising begins with team members asking others to contribute. Then, there are a flurry of specific fundraising events leading up to the Relay. This year, those include a bake sale at the North Bend QFC April 18, a garage sale May 22-23 and a spaghetti feed at the Sno-Valley Eagles June 6.

The fundraising is culminated with the actual Relay, when team members take turns walking through the night around a track. Tents become team headquarters for snacking, playing games — and sometimes even sleeping. Candlelit luminaries in memory of those who have died or survived cancer light the track through the night, until the candles’ glow gives way to sunrise.

The Relay is scheduled for July 11 at Centennial Field, 39903 SE Park St. in Snoqualmie. Last year’s event raised more than $85,000.

If you are looking for an activity that will impact someone you know at some point in your life, helping raise money to fight cancer — and having fun doing it — this may be just the answer. The next team meeting is at 6:30 p.m. April 14 at the Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Course, and you’re invited to come and learn more.

Not a team player or don’t want to raise money? Lots of volunteers are needed! More information is available at www.main.acsevents.org.
