Dog park built on Snoqualmie Ridge

After months of campaigning for a place to let their pets run off-leash, Snoqualmie Ridge dog owners are finally getting their way.

A recently developed temporary off-leash dog park in Snoqualmie will celebrate its grand opening May 2.

George Isaacs, a resident of the Ridge development, is happy that dogs and their owners will have a place to call their own. Isaacs is an organizer of the Snoqualmie Ridge Rovers, a group of dog owners who had approached the city about building a dog park after they were asked by police to leave other city parks when they let their dogs play without leashes.

Murray Franklin, the developer of Eagle Pointe, a new subdivision on the ridge, responded to the dog owner’s calls for an off-leash park and built the dog park as an amenity for Ridge residents.

Isaacs is glad that his Golden Retriever “Koa” will have a place to play, but he also thinks that many in the community will use the park. He said that the dog park would be a great place for stay-at-home moms to bring their kids.

“We felt it was important; owning a dog as a pet in Snoqualmie Ridge is part of the demographics, and a dog park was one feature that was missing,” said Ron Boscola, manager of Murray Franklin.

Isaacs said that the dog park couldn’t have been built without the support of Murray Franklin. He said that the developers took the best ideas from other area dog parks to build the park in Eagle Pointe.

As part of its agreement with the city, the development had to include land for a community park. The off-leash dog park is located in what will later be a 16-acre community park. When it is built, the park will have soccer and football fields, as well as a picnic area.

However, the dog park will not be part of the city’s park system and the city plans to dismantle the dog park when the city begins developing the park. The parks board is discussing the possibility of having an off leash dog park in the community park, but has not budgeted any funds for the project.

Although it is mostly finished, the dog park will not be officially open until May 2. Some additional fencing is needed at the park, and a concrete staircase from the sidewalk to the dog park has not been completed. People are encouraged to not use the park until it is officially open.

The grand opening will feature a doggie social. People food, free dog treats and leashes will also be available at the event. The grand opening starts at noon.

The Ridge Rovers will provide information on their Web site, www.ridgerovers.com, after the grand opening about ways that people can help out with the maintenance and support of the park.
