Mount Si girls claim first league track title
May 20, 2009
The history book for the Mount Si girls track and field team is now complete.
The Wildcats picked up a pile of career-bests and dominated from start to finish in winning their first ever league title May 15 at the KingCo 3A/2A championships at Eastlake High School.
Mount Si won four individual events and sent an astounding 18 total athletes onto this week’s district tournament as it ran away with the team title with 213 points. Mercer Island was runner-up at 140.

Mount Si softball takes second at league tournament
May 20, 2009
A tiebreaker may have kept the Mount Si softball team from finishing second in KingCo 3A during the regular season, but nothing was able to keep the Wildcats from that spot when it came to the league tournament.
Mount Si won its first two games of the tournament, before falling in the finals against league champion Juanita, on May 14-15. As a result of their runner-up finish, the Wildcats not only get to play another week, they will now enter a Class 3A district tournament with a favorable seed.
Talk about peaking at the right time.
“The goal going into the week was to get these guys to play Juanita for the title,” Mount Si head coach Larry White said. “So, I feel pretty good about how they’re playing. They’re swinging the bats pretty well and Alex (Johnson) is pitching great games.”
Baseball season ends quickly for Mount Si
May 20, 2009
The Mount Si baseball team saw its season come to a shocking end with an 8-7 loss to Juanita in the first round of the KingCo 3A Tournament on May 12.
The Wildcats, who finish at 14-7 overall, tied for second place in the league at the end of the regular season. Because they lost a tiebreaker with Bellevue, they were forced to play a first-round game against Juanita.
Snoqualmie Middle School students get lesson in online safety
May 20, 2009
Seattle Police Department Detective Malinda Wilson gave Snoqualmie Middle School students a crash course on Internet safety May 18.
How many of you, she asked, have a cell phone? An e-mail address? A MySpace or Facebook account? Almost every one of Snoqualmie Middle School’s 350 students raised their hands for each question.
For the next hour, she educated students how to safely manage their online activities. Wilson said she had worked in sting operations before, pretending to be a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. Just as she managed to imitate someone younger than herself, sexual predators and manipulative people can easily mislead youth, she said.
Valley students could get a free ride to college
May 20, 2009
College tuition may seem out of reach for many families as the economy continues its slump and state universities raise their rates.
But college is within reach — even free — to some students who meet requirements.
After hearing the 2006 Washington Learns report, the state Legislature agreed to implement the report’s recommendation of making college more accessible to students of low-income families. In 2007, the Washington state Legislature allotted $7.4 million to fund the College Bound Scholarship Program, which will begin in 2012 and last until 2014.
Snoqualmie Valley seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students can apply for the program now and receive the money once they are of college age.

Valley men nominated for regional Emmy awards
May 16, 2009
Every fall, Americans gather around their television screens to watch the Primetime Emmy Awards. Snoqualmie residents Rion Groves and Kevin Allar do too, but their hopes aren’t resting on whether Entourage or Laura Linney will take home a gold statue.
Instead, both men are thinking of the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The academy has divided the U.S. into 19 regions for local competing newscasters, multimedia producers and more. The Northwest Chapter includes Alaska, Washington, Oregon and parts of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and California.
In 2008, Groves and Allar took home two regional Emmy awards and, this year, judges have nominated five of their works from Farmers Life Insurance for an Emmy. Although they share the awards, the Snoqualmie residents took different paths to their careers in multimedia production.

Wildcats advance at league softball tournament
May 15, 2009
The Mount Si softball team won its opening game in the KingCo 3A tournament, 5-2, against Bellevue May 14 at Inglemoor High School.
The win automatically puts the Wildcats into next week’s district tournament and advances them into a semifinal contest with Sammamish today at 5:30 p.m. at Inglemoor. If they win, they’ll play in the finals at 7:30 p.m. later tonight.
Each team scored one run in the first inning and the scored remained tied until the sixth, when Mount Si broke the game open with three runs. Brielle Buhner and Danielle Covello led off with back-to-back doubles to plate one run. Covello then stole third base and scored on a single to make it 3-1. Another double allowed the Wildcats to score another run and move into the seventh with a comfortable lead.
Alex Johnson picked up the pitching win for Mount Si, going the distance.
