North Bend’s first summer block party is set for June 27, and the schedule promises a good time in the Valley.
Musical entertainment kicks off at 4 p.m. on the Centennial Stage with the “Cascade Jazz All Stars,” featuring the Cascade Jazz Trio, Harley Brumbaugh, Suzanna Fuller, the Valley Dolls, and other guests. At 6 p.m. “The Dog Tones,” a musical variety band, takes the stage.
The musical portion of the Block Party’s entertainment concludes with what organizers will only describe as a “very special and well known musical guest.” Organizers wouldn’t say who the headliner is, but the show starts at 7:30 p.m. and runs to 10 p.m.
The Bendigo Stage will feature a variety of entertainment, including two eating contests — a donut eating contest and a cheeseburger eating contest.
The cheeseburger eating contest is being sponsored by Twede’s Café. The contest will consist of six, four-person teams that will compete to see who can eat the most hamburgers in 20 minutes.
Each burger will be made with a whopping five pounds of ground beef.
To participate, please call Kyle at 831-511, or e-mail twedescafe@centurytel.net with the team name and the names of team members. Cheeseburger eating competitors should sign up by June 22.
Other entertainment planned for the Bendigo Stage includes a comedy from the Valley Center Stage, and a Doggy Fashion Show/Contest. Times for these events haven’t been determined yet, according to festival organizers.
North Bend residents can wish the city a happy 100th birthday by signing a “giant birthday bard.”
The card will be on display at the Block Party, and can be signed at the North Bend QFC on June 20, from 1-4 p.m.
Of course, a summer festival would be incomplete without a beer garden. At the beer garden, festival goers can watch a weightlifting demonstration and competition.
The Encompass-sponsored Kid’s Area at the block party will feature a children’s bike parade, a dunk tank and a raceway where kids can build their own cars and race them.
Festival organizers are also developing an idea for a kid’s salon, where kids can get their hair gelled or sprayed with fun, albeit temporary, colors.
The kid’s area will also include a large slide and obstacle course and a bounce house.
The dunk tank may be fun for adults too, who will have the opportunity to dunk North Bend notables like Mayor Ken Hearing.
The festival organizers also say that a dog search and rescue demonstration, and a unicycle demonstration will be featured at the block party. The unicycle demo is planned for 7 p.m.
The city of North Bend and the Downtown North Bend Merchant’s Association are hosting the block party.
