County to discuss plans for Snoqualmie Forest

June 19, 2009

King County is hosting a public meeting to discuss plans to provide additional environmental protections for the 156,000-acre Snoqualmie Forest on Monday, June 22.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Snoqualmie Library, 7824 Center Boulevard SE.

King County is considering adding the Snoqualmie Forest and a number of other properties that it already owns or has a property interest in, to a proposed “open space amendment” to the county’s charter. The meeting will provide information on how the county plans to manage the property.

The county already has a conservation interest in the Snoqualmie Forest that would prevent the property from being developed, or from having its land use changed in any way that would alter its open space status. The June 22 meeting will be the fifth and final such meeting in a series of meetings that began last spring.

Later in the summer the King County Council will hold formal public hearing before taking any action on the proposed charter amendment. The Council wants to make a decision by July on whether to put the charter amendments on the ballot for a public vote.

Under the proposed open space amendment, no new land would be purchased, and there are no direct costs to the county associated with the proposed amendment.

More information about the proposed open space amendment is posted on the county’s Web site at
