A trip to the state playoffs, a gang of tackles and a ridiculous amount of yards gained weren’t enough for two senior members of the Mount Si football team.
They have one more prep game to play.
Alex Hiebert and Sean Snead are scheduled to compete for the West squad in the East/West All-State All-Star game at 1 p.m. June 27 at Everett Memorial Stadium. Their inclusion in the game represents the culmination of two lengthy and memorable high-school careers at Mount Si.
Hiebert was the KingCo 3A/2A Lineman of the Year during his senior season. He was a force on both sides of the ball, leading the Wildcats in receptions as a tight end and leading the entire league in tackles with 82 during the regular season.
He plans to play tight end for Humboldt State University (Calif.) in the fall and will major in environmental engineering.
“It is a tremendous honor to not only be nominated but to be selected to play in this game. Having an opportunity to play with 60 of the best players in the state will be an amazing experience and I’m really looking forward to it,” Hiebert said.
“It will definitely be nice knowing Sean will be there representing Mount Si, as well. After a great four years in the program together, it will be an excellent way to end it.”
Snead was selected for the game after a record-crushing season at running back. He rushed for a school-record 1,664 yards during the season, which led the entire league. He also managed a school-record five rushing touchdowns in a playoff qualifier victory against Peninsula.
Snead plans to attend Pacific Lutheran University in the fall, playing running back his first year and then possibly switching positions later.
“I’m just honored to be playing with athletes of this caliber and I’m really excited to be able to test my skills as a player and see where I stack up against some of the best in the state,” he said about playing in the All-State game.
With Snead and Hiebert leading the way, Mount Si went 6-5 this past season. The Wildcats placed third in the league standings, romped past Peninsula to get into the state playoffs, then lost a final-second heartbreaker to Eastside Catholic in the first round.
Both Hiebert and Snead recalled their time with the Wildcats as one of learning.
“I’m going to remember how we as a team grew so much over the years. We were an average team junior year and, once senior year hit, we knew we had something special,” Snead said. “Even though our record didn’t show it and we didn’t get as far in the playoffs as we should have, we still had a great year and we grew so much.”
Fellow Mount Si standouts Ryan Ransavage, Michael Nelson and Tyson Riley have been named alternates for the All-State game. Other KingCo 3A/2A players named to the West team include Bellevue’s Drew Norris and Peter Nguyn.
Both Snead and Hiebert are taking a two-tiered approach to the game — have fun, but play to win.
“I’m looking forward to working hard and having a lot of fun during the week leading up to the game, getting to know the players and competing in practice,” Hiebert said. “But, in the end, we are there to play a game and when I take the field I’ll be playing hard and playing to win.”
