Runners pursue monthlong Snoqualmie Valley Cup

There was great weather, a packed crowd and, of course, a pie or two.

The annual Run for the Pies was held in Carnation July 4 as the culmination of a three-race summer event to award the winner of the Snoqualmie Valley Cup, which began June 6. The race was preceded by a run at both Duvall Days and Fall City Days, and the results for the cup were tallied by using the World Masters Athletic age-grading tables.

Joe Sheeran, who traveled all the way from Ellensburg for all three races, was named the winner of the Valley Cup in the men’s division. Sara Gist was the winner of the women’s division. Each runner received a trophy and a $250 prize.

But, as usual, these races were more about simply getting out and getting involved in a sport quite popular throughout the Valley.

“It’s great. I like the small-town race atmosphere,” Aiden Irish of Duvall said. “It’s not like the big races with all the hype. It’s pretty laid back.”

Irish was the overall winner of the men’s race at the Run for the Pies, as he crossed the finish line in a time of 15:32 to complete the 5K course.

Mount Si High School standout Alex Rudd was the winner of the girls 15-19 age division with a time of 19:59.

“I really like this race, because there are so many people and so many to run with,” she said. “It’s completely different than being out there and running by yourself. It’s exciting and easy to run.”

Rudd is getting ready for her senior season at Mount Si, having already placed in the top 25 as a sophomore at the Class 3A state cross country championships. She said the Run for the Pies is an annual event for her.

“It’s sort of like a family tradition. We try to do all of the local races,” Rudd said. “This is the first year I’ve run this one by myself, because it’s the first year I’ve had a driver’s license.”

Rudd’s certainly wasn’t the only runner from the North Bend and Snoqualmie area to compete in the Valley Cup’s three races, as Snoqualmie’s Jessica Heytin and Heather Liati tied for 22nd at the women’s 10K version of the Duvall Days run and took 45th and 46th at the Fall City Fun Run.

Veronica Hansen won the women’s division of the Duvall Days 10K with a time of 41:23, while Dominic Smargiassi took the men’s with a time of 33:19.

You mentioned in this article that there were other runners from the north bend/snoqualmie area that participated these races and mentioned several girls.I wanted to let you know that my son Alex Kampp won his division in the 5K Fall City Fun Run this year. He will be a senior in high school next year and lives in Snoqualmie.(Also a standout in his high school) It would have been nice if he would have been included in your article.
