After a surprising season-opening loss to Bothell, Mount Si bounced returned to fundamentals to beat Mercer Island, 3-2.
“Beating Mercer Island is always nice,” said head coach Bonnie Foote. “They’re our competition for sure this year.”The Wildcats are looking to take another league title, but will have to overcome Mercer Island and Juanita, which has a strong team as well.
But for now, the team is focusing on its fundamentals — passing and serving.
“Serving and passing is your bread and butter,” Foote said.
The team returned four starters, including two seniors.
“They’re a very close group,” Foote said.
One of the team’s strongest hitters — Shelagh Macaulay — was out with an injury, but is expected to return later this season.
The match against Mercer Island was a bit of a “rollercoaster,” Foote noted.
The Wildcats dropped the second and fourth sets, but won the match. Their play was a strong improvement since the game against Bothell, which they lost 3-0.
The Wildcats had a 15 percent error rate on serves and a 10 percent error rate for hits against Mercer Island, compared to 26 percent and 21 percent against Bothell.
“Our main focus this year is just to improve with every match,” Foote said.
