Reading buddies debut at Opstad Elementary

Literacy For Life instructor Katie Morris began the reading buddies training program just as any reading tutor would — by drawing her audience in with a story.
After reading “A Quiet Place,” by Douglas Wood, Morris dove into the lesson, giving community volunteers ideas for how they could structure their weekly Reading Buddy time. By the end of October, Opstad Elementary School teachers will have identified which students need extra reading help. The school will match them with a reading buddy — a volunteer who agrees to meet with a student for 30 minutes every week. Read more
Recalling a life abroad

William Blackerby went from cotton fields in southwestern Texas to spots across the world during 25 years in the Foreign Service, including 10 months under arrest in communist China.
Sixty years ago, William Blackerby was under house arrest in Qingdao (Tsingtao), China. When communist forces took control of the port city in 1949, they had quickly locked down all U.S. State Department staff, including Blackerby, a Foreign Service Officer. Read more

Mount Si golfers finish fifth in district tournament, send two to state

Four Mount Si High School golfers traveled to Mukilteo’s Harbour Pointe golf course for a district match against 44 other golfers from other schools in the KingCo and Seattle Metro divisions. Together, the four golfers earned Mount Si a fifth-place finish out of nine schools. Read more

At noon, an SMS student found a note in a hallway that said a bomb is set to go off at 12:20 today. The student reported the note to authorities, who called police and evacuated the building before 12:20 p.m. Read more
After-hours gas leak at Mount Si causes evacuation

A gas leak at Mount Si High School led to an evacuation of the campus Oct. 15 when a contractor accidentally cut a two-inch plastic gas line near an outside gas meter.
The leak happened around 6 p.m., after school had been let out for the day. The school immediately called 911. Read more
