In a back-and-forth battle Oct. 30, the Mount Si Wildcats fell to the Liberty Patriots, 38-28.

Mount Si struck first within the first two minutes of the game, stopping Liberty’s offense and scoring on its first offensive play. In that play, senior quarterback Chris Clark threw a backward pass to junior wide receiver Rossco Castagno, and Castagno then threw a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jordin Kinnune.

However, Liberty’s offense quickly responded on its next drive, marching down the field and scoring just one minute later on a 16-yard touchdown run from junior running back Chandler Jenkins.

For the remainder of the first half, Mount Si had difficulty holding Liberty’s offense, as Liberty scored two more touchdowns before Mount Si responded in the closing seconds of the second quarter with a 24-yard field goal from freshman kicker Cameron VanWinkle.

The field goal brought the score to 24-10 at halftime.

Mount Si shined in the third quarter, closing Liberty’s lead to 24-20 with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Clark to junior wide receiver Matt Bankston with 4:29 remaining and a 30-yard field goal from VanWinkle with 3:37 remaining.

Mount Si also recovered two fumbles in the third quarter.

However, Liberty struck back, scoring two more touchdowns in the middle of the fourth quarter, which increased its lead to 38-20. Mount Si scored one final time on a touchdown pass from Clark to junior tight end Joe Farmer with 46 seconds remaining in the game.

The Wildcats even completed a two-point conversion after the play, but it was too little too late.

Mount Si head coach Charlie Kinnune said he was proud of his team despite the loss.

“That’s the third team in the state,” he said. “We played them tough.”

Bankston said he felt the Wildcats played a good game.

“We couldn’t put it together sometimes,” Bankston said. “But we stayed in there, we tried our hardest, and it ended up being a really close game.”

Jordin Kinnune also thought the team played well.

“We came out and we hung with them, but we just couldn’t pull it out,” Jordin Kinnune said.

The Wildcats will travel to Renton Memorial Stadium Nov. 7 to take on the Hazen Highlanders in a postseason match to earn entry into the 3A state playoffs.

Hazen finished the regular season second in the Seamount League with a 7-3 overall record.

On Oct. 9, Liberty defeated Hazen 56-0.
