Elementary and high school students across Snoqualmie Valley are collecting nonperishable food for the annual Foodball drive, held this year from Nov. 17-25 and Dec. 1-17.The first donation spree will help families at Thanksgiving time and the second donation period will go to families over the holidays.
Foodball chairwoman senior Molly Meyers encouraged people to donate cans of hydrogenated milk, jars of spaghetti sauce and packets of pasta. People can also contribute with their wallets, giving cash or checks made out to Mount Si High School to support the drive. Every dollar given equals three pounds of food, according to Meyers.
“All of the food goes directly to the community,” she said.
Last year, the community gave 45,000 pounds of food. This year, students are upping their goal to 50,000 pounds.
“I think it’s absolutely amazing,” Mt Si Helping Hand Food Band director Greg Schatzlein said. “We go through 15,000 pounds per week. That’s 3.5 weeks of food to us.”
He commended students for their hard work and fundraising spirit.
“I really like it when younger people are involved in charity work and finding the meaning for what it means to give,” Schatzlein said.
Foodball proceeds will benefit the Mt Si Helping Hand Food Bank, two food banks in Fall City, one in Preston and Encompass.
Normally, the first period classes at Mount Si High School compete against one another to see which one can collect the most food, but the Associated Student Body tweaked the contest this year and challenged each grade to raise the most instead.
- From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. students will accept donations Nov. 21 at the North Bend QFC and Dec. 12 at Safeway.
