Should Snoqualmie Valley School District modernize and expand Mount Si High School or transform Snoqualmie Middle School into a satellite campus for the high school?

District administrators are wrestling with this question.

The district will be over capacity by 500 students as soon as the 2012-13 school year, according to enrollment projections. The district is asking the public to weigh in on the two expansion choices.

Expanding and modernizing Mount Si would cost about $100 million and would give the school a second story of classrooms and an elevated parking garage, among other improvements. The expansion would save the district from having to build and operate a second high school.

The second option, annexing Snoqualmie Middle School, would allow the high school to grow by 500 to 600 students. To prevent crowding at the middle school level, the district would build a replacement middle school for about $50 million on district-owned land. Building a new middle school costs less than a new high school, takes less time to build and requires less space, said Snoqualmie Valley schools spokeswoman Carolyn Malcolm.

If the middle school were annexed, it would need renovations and a transportation option for students coming from the high school. Also, Mount Si would still need renovations.
