Eating together gives something to chew on

Our family sat down at the table Tuesday evening for supper, each one of us exhausted from another busy day.
It felt good to finally be together again – a time that’s become our favorite part of the evening. A variety of conversations take place.
We were just about to start on dessert when our youngest daughter’s face lit up. She raised her eyebrows with one of those “I just remembered something!” expressions that we parents aren’t always excited about.
“Go ahead,” I said. “What’s so funny?”
“Well, I was just remembering how we tried to sell Popsicles one summer when we were little.” She was referring to herself and her sister, three years her senior.
“Yeah – so?” I said.
She tried to suppress her laughter.
“I mean that we sold Popsicles to friends.” She paused. “From our bedroom.”
My husband and I put down our forks. “You what?” he asked.
“We used our front window to make a drive-thru,” she continued. “We snuck Popsicles out of the freezer.”
“Where was I?” I asked.
“I don’t know. But we snuck them out when you weren’t looking.”
The gal wasn’t finished. I guess since she’s so close to turning 18 – and this took place 13 years ago, what could happen?
“The other kids in the neighborhood heard about it so they came, too,” she confessed. “They even rode their bikes right up to the window to pick up their orders.”
That’s why we ran out of Popsicles so fast, I thought.
By this time, her eyes were watering from laughing so hard.
“What in the world gave you that idea?” I asked.
“We thought we could make money for you!”
Bless her heart – no wonder the neighbor kids always wanted to hang out at our place. And at around 25 cents each, I think we may have almost broken even.
After supper it dawned on me that some of our family’s best conversations have taken place right there at the kitchen table – which isn’t too far from the same bedroom window that once served as a drive-thru, I might add.
I guess it just goes to show that eating together can give us something to chew on. Don’t you think?
