They’d met before, the girls basketball teams from Juanita and Mount Si. Last time, the Juanita Rebels came away with a tight win, 49-46. But that night was a distant memory for the Wildcats when they stepped onto the court Feb. 3Mount Si came out strong, jumping to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter. But Juanita battled back in the second quarter with 11 points while holding Mount Si to only three points. The Wildcats went to the locker room at halftime holding onto a one point lead.

Mount Si extended its lead slightly in the third quarter, outscoring the Rebels 15-12. The fourth quarter was a seesaw of action that came down a tie game with under 30 seconds left.

Junior Hailey Eddings, the Wildcats’ leading scorer this season, was fouled, but missed both free throws. Juanita came up with the rebound, but two Mount Si players tied her up. A jump ball was called. The possession arrow gave the ball to the Wildcats.

There were 15 seconds on the clock when Mount Si inbounded the ball, which they moved down the court. Junior Stevie Riley found open ground at the top of the key from the 3-point line, got the ball and took the shot. The ball swished through the net, putting the Wildcats ahead, 49-46.

Juanita inbounded the ball and the final buzzer sounded.

The win improved Mount Si’s conference record to 6-5.

Riley’s shot was the only one she took during the game. Senior Traci Nelson led the Wildcats with 12 points, followed by Eddings with 11 points. The junior had a double-double, with 11 rebounds. Sophomore Sarah McDonald helped set the Wildcats’ table with three assists. She came up with a key 3-point shot during the fourth quarter, along with freshman Molly Sellers.

Practice paid off for Mount Si in the game’s final play.

“We’d been practicing situation drills last week and this — and it really paid off,” coach Megan Marson wrote in an e-mail. “The girls were calm and poised, especially during the final possession.”Lady Wildcats beat Juanita with last-second shot
