The Snoqualmie Planning Commission plans to host an ongoing speaker forum at Snoqualmie City Hall about how sustainability issues relate to planning for future growth, energy use, environmental health, land use and development in the city.

The Sustainability Speakers Forum begins Feb. 16 with “Laying the Foundation: Environmental concerns – globally and locally” and continues on the third Monday of each month through June.

Guest speakers will be local and regional experts who will discuss aspects of planning a sustainable community. Each session will include an opportunity for group discussion.

The first session explores local and global environmental concerns, including pollution and climate change, and how decisions made by the city and its residents affect the environment. The scheduled speakers include Rob Matthews with the sustainable design firm Mithun and Justus Stewart with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, which has worked with 34 Washington cities and counties on sustainable development.

“We want to communicate how sustainability relates to city government and long-range planning. We also hope to touch on ways that citizens can become more sustainable in their own lives in a realistic and cost-effective manner,” said Trapper Bailey, head of the Snoqualmie Planning Commission.

For more information or to register for individual sessions or the entire series, visit the city’s Web site and click “Sustainability Speakers Forum” in the Special Events section. Registration is optional.

Sustainability Speakers Forum schedule (all events are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.):

  • Feb. 16: Laying the Foundation: Environmental concerns globally and locally. This first session will address global energy and environmental concerns, sustainability issues and how individuals might affect – and be affected by – such trends locally.
  • Mar.15: How Green is My Valley? Planning a community for our children. How can Snoqualmie Valley residents support the urban forest, a variety of green spaces, a toxic-free environment for children, and healthy and local food choices?
  • Apr. 19: Traveling ‘Back to the Future’: Urban form and transportation. Driving alone to work has been a trend for only the last 50 years. How do travel choices affect community planning and sustainability? How can a community get people out of their cars to walk and exercise more?
  • May 17: The Electric Slide and the Green Side: Energy, water, and green buildings. Wise energy and water use are hot topics in the media, but how can individuals make a difference? Guest speakers will discuss the future of regional and local energy production, green building practices, and water and energy conservation.
  • June 21: Green Visions and “If I Had My Druthers.” The final session will be a public workshop and conversation with citizens about community planning issues and opportunities for Snoqualmie and its neighbors.
