Despite leading at halftime, the Mount Si boys basketball team couldn’t hold off Franklin in the SeaKing 3A District Tournament, Feb. 25.

The Quakers won 66-55, forcing the Wildcats into a loser-out game against O’Dea at Mount Si (16-7), March 2.

Franklin (14-10) advanced to a winner-to-state game against Rainier Beach.

Mount Si went into halftime with a six-point lead, built largely on Tanner Riley’s shooting. The senior hit 14 of his 22 points in the second quarter.

The Quakers looked timid against the Wildcats’ effective offense and tough zone defense in the first half.

But the game changed when a charging foul was called on Zander Nelson in the third quarter. It was the senior’s third personal foul, forcing him to sit for the rest of the quarter.

Nelson, who finished with 9 points, has been a key piece of Mount Si’s offense all season, and losing him allowed Franklin to collect itself.

“It was a momentum changer,” coach Jeff D’Ambrosio said.

Franklin outscored Mount Si in the second half 40-23, capitalizing on some turnovers.

“They got hot at the time when we had some trouble on some possessions,” he said.

Three players led the Quakers offense, senior forward Juwuan Buchanan (18 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks), sophomore guard Anrio Adams (16 points) and junior forward Ray Rogers (15 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field).

Adams has been a key piece of Franklin’s seven wins in its last eight games. The Mount Si game was the only time in that period he didn’t score at least 20 points.

Rogers caught the Wildcats by surprise, far surpassing his season average 6.8 points per game.

Mount Si hosted O’Dea (17-7) March 2. Before the game, the Wildcats were 0-3 against the Irish over the past two years. Results were not available by the Star’s deadline.
