Opstad Elementary students learn cool way to say ‘no’ to smoking

Warning them of emphysema, hairy tongue and the pesticides in cigarettes, three Mount Si High School juniors convinced an entire class of fifth-graders to trash the ash.

During the Teens Against Tobacco Use presentation the juniors broke down popular misconceptions, telling fifth graders about the dangers of smoking and showing them smoke-damaged lungs and teeth — promptings plenty of ewws from the class — so that the elementary students would have no misconceptions about the negative effects of smoking cigarettes.

William E. Bedell

 

William ‘Bill’ E. Bedell was born Aug. 3, 1949, in Bridgeport, Conn., and died Feb. 12, 2010.

It was with great sadness that hundreds of people filled Mount Si High School’s auditorium Feb. 21 to honor Bill’s life.

He was well known throughout the Pacific Northwest due to his pastoral work at Snoqualmie Valley Alliance Church and the business he shared with his wife, Leslie.

He touched hundreds of people through their Life Recovery Skills business.

Kathryn Lanning Emerick died March 30 at Foundation House Retirement Center in Federal Way, where she had been a resident since July 2009.

Kathryn was born to Mathias and Suzanna Schantz July 1, 1915, in Glen Ullin, N.D., where she was raised. As a young woman, Kathryn moved to North Bend to live with her brother John Antone and family. It was here she met and married Roy Lanning. They remained in Snoqualmie until Roy died in September 1975.

Snoqualmie Valley to host half marathon

Snoqualmie Valley is hosting its first half marathon May 1 in more than two decades.

Organizers expect nearly 1,000 runners from across the region to participate in the inaugural Cinco de Mayo Mini Marathon and 8-kilometer run. The event will start on Schusman Avenue behind Mount Si High School and finish at the school’s track facility.
