Construction workers turned off the heat in Mount Si High School’s main building during spring break, April 10-14, and will not turn it on again until September, when the new geothermal system is installed.
Before the new geothermal system is ready to go online, construction workers have to remove the current boiler system, and its associated pipes and other parts.
“The sooner we start the changeover, the sooner we can utilize the cooling system in September,” Principal Randy Taylor wrote in an e-mail to parents.
In the meantime, fans will continue to circulate fresh air in the main building. The school’s portables will have normal heating and cooling capability since they have separate heat pumps.
Until warmer weather arrives, staff and students are encouraged to dress in layers to stay warm, Taylor wrote.
