Valley musician devotes career to jazz

June 30, 2010

Courtney Cutchins isn’t your average singer.

At Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, she was never content to just show up and sing, her former teacher Jim Knapp said.

“She was really involved in all aspects of the music,” he said.

A local arts organization, the Snoqualmie Valley Friends of the Performing Arts, is honoring Cutchins’ dedication to her craft by naming her as their first Artist of the Month. Thomas Tilton, chair of the nonprofit organization, said the goal is to recognize people who come from the Snoqualmie Valley and contribute to the arts here.

Contributed Courtney Cutchins, a Snoqualmie Valley native, was honored by The Snoqualmie Valley Friends of the Performing Arts.

The 21-year-old Cutchins’ development through the local school system and her strong local performances were key to her selection, Tilton said.

“Courtney is a rising star, clearly,” he said. “We wanted to provide her with support and recognition as she continues on her path.”

A Valley native, Cutchins played the saxophone in her school band starting in fifth grade and continued playing throughout high school, which she graduated from in 2006.

Police blotter

June 30, 2010

Snoqualmie

Finish, then we’ll talk

At 12:36 a.m. June 11, an officer noticed a Ford pickup outside Snoqualmie Market at 8030 Railroad Ave. The driver — the only person in the truck — got out and begin urinating. The officer approached the man, letting him finish. He noticed the man was swaying back and forth, smelled alcohol on his breath and found he was driving with a suspended license. The man tested positive for alcohol in his blood over the legal limit. He thanked the police for taking him off the street. He was booked into Issaquah Jail for driving with a suspended license and driving while intoxicated.

I probably shouldn’t be driving, but I am

At 2:15 a.m. June 12, an officer pulled over a Cadillac CTS at Swing Avenue Southeast and Southeast Jacobia Street for erratic driving. The Snoqualmie man agreed to perform field sobriety tests and failed. He said he’d had four drinks and probably shouldn’t be driving. The man, who was arrested, later tested positive for alcohol in his blood over the legal limit. He was booked into Issaquah Jail for driving while intoxicated.
