Snoqualmie received a $12,000 grant from Public Health — Seattle & King County on July 21. The city plans to use the money to pay for an intern who will coordinate an effort to update Snoqualmie’s master plan, said Nicole Sanders, an associate planner with the city.

Snoqualmie is working with about 10 other cities to develop a master plan detailing pedestrian and biking pathways. The cities are contracting together to work with a master plan consultant from King County.

Sanders called the public health grant competitive, and said she was glad the city had received the money. City staff members are always assessing their priorities, she said.

“Of course, we’d had a lot of interest in supporting walkability,” Sanders said.

The goals of the master plan include connecting regional trails with local trails and increasing trail signage.

Public Health awarded $8.9 million to 51 entities, including cities, school districts and community-based organizations to improve nutrition and physical activity, and decrease tobacco use and exposure.

The $8.9 million is part of the one-time federal stimulus funds in the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative. The grants pay for activities that produce long-lasting changes and improve community conditions.

“We are helping our communities use proven strategies to fight the leading causes of death in our region, such as heart disease and diabetes,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said in a news release. “Our goal is for all residents, regardless of where they live in the county, to have access to healthy choices and opportunities for healthy living.”
