Established candidates win in primary election

Established candidates led in early results from the Aug. 17 primary election.
The Si View Metropolitan Parks District’s $6.7 million bond measure staked a large lead in early returns, with more than 62 percent of votes cast for the measure. The district includes North Bend and parts of unincorporated King County.
Congressman Dave Reichert pulled ahead of a crowded field, including the Democrat, former Microsoft and Drugstore.com executive Suzan DelBene. Reichert, a former King County sheriff, led DelBene by 46 percent to 29 percent in King County. Districtwide, Reichert, a former King County sheriff and Auburn resident, opened a big lead against DelBene: 47 percent to 27 percent.
Boeing Classic opens its gates with “Free Friday”

The Boeing Classic will be open for free to all spectators for the first day of competition, Aug. 27.
The gates open at 9 a.m. The tournament will be kicked off with a low flyover by a Boeing 777 jet airliner at 11:20 a.m.
Snoqualmie painters get out for Plein Air Paint Out

The picturesque surroundings of downtown Snoqualmie will get even more so come Aug. 28. And if not picturesque, at least painting-esque.
The second annual Snoqualmie Plein Air Paint Out will gather some of the finest painters in the West, as they each start and finish a painting in seven hours, all in the open air.
The contest will last from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., with a showing scheduled for 5 p.m. at Isadora’s Café, 8062 Railroad Ave. S.E.
Informed voting is vital in a healthy democracy

The Aug. 17 primary election results brought good news and bad news. We are not talking about who won or lost, though. We are talking about the voter turnout.
We have all heard innumerable times how important it is to vote. It is absolutely necessary that voters participate in a democracy.
North Bend City Council approves new finance director

The North Bend City Council has confirmed the appointment of Maryann Nelson as the city’s new finance director.
She follows Elena Montgomery, who retires Sept. 1 after 20 years of working for the city.
Nelson has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Washington, and more than 20 years of experience in banking. She has served as the chief financial officer for three local banks.
