Boeing Classic opens its gates with “Free Friday”

The Boeing Classic will be open for free to all spectators for the first day of competition, Aug. 27.
The gates open at 9 a.m. The tournament will be kicked off with a low flyover by a Boeing 777 jet airliner at 11:20 a.m.
Snoqualmie painters get out for Plein Air Paint Out

The picturesque surroundings of downtown Snoqualmie will get even more so come Aug. 28. And if not picturesque, at least painting-esque.
The second annual Snoqualmie Plein Air Paint Out will gather some of the finest painters in the West, as they each start and finish a painting in seven hours, all in the open air.
The contest will last from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., with a showing scheduled for 5 p.m. at Isadora’s Café, 8062 Railroad Ave. S.E.
Informed voting is vital in a healthy democracy

The Aug. 17 primary election results brought good news and bad news. We are not talking about who won or lost, though. We are talking about the voter turnout.
We have all heard innumerable times how important it is to vote. It is absolutely necessary that voters participate in a democracy.
North Bend City Council approves new finance director

The North Bend City Council has confirmed the appointment of Maryann Nelson as the city’s new finance director.
She follows Elena Montgomery, who retires Sept. 1 after 20 years of working for the city.
Nelson has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Washington, and more than 20 years of experience in banking. She has served as the chief financial officer for three local banks.

Clear skies greeted the opening day of the Boeing Classic. The green grass of TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge sparkled in the sun. The grounds were a flurry of activity as final preparations were made for the tournament.

Former sports stars came together with amateur golfers for the opening event — the Seahawks Rumble on the Ridge. The players included names that echo in Washington college sports — University of Washington giants like Don James and Warren Moon, and Washington State University legend Jack Thompson, the “Throwin’ Samoan.” Former local professionals were on hand, too, like Sonics guard Slick Watts and Seahawks Hall of Famer Lynn Swann.

Mount Si High School students fight school bullying at Railroad Days

Off in a corner of Railroad Days, away from the commotion, two students from Mount Si High School were engineering change.
Amy Robles and Addison Brothers waited for people to trickle over to their spot at the United Methodist Church parking lot. In the meantime, they spoke about their alma mater and how they wanted it to shed its reputation as a nest of bullies.
Established candidate beats the establishment’s candidate in 5th District primary

Established candidates took the lead in early results for the Aug. 17 primary race for Position No. 2 in the 5th Legislative District. Incumbent state Rep. Glenn Anderson, a Republican, staked a large lead ahead of Democratic challengers David Spring and Dean Willard.
Anderson, a Fall City resident, received 58 percent of the votes counted. Spring, a North Bend resident, garnered 25 percent. Willard received 16 percent, despite having raised more campaign money than Anderson and Spring combined.
Snoqualmie Transportation Benefit District board approves car tab fee

To partially pay for growing infrastructure costs, Snoqualmie residents will now have to pay a $20 fee on every vehicle registered in the city.
The fee, approved by the district’s board of directors Aug. 23, is going to be levied as part of the city’s Transportation Benefit District. The fee is expected to bring in an estimated $62,000 for the city to use for transportation infrastructure improvements.
