Mount Si volleyball is full of talent and experience

September 29, 2010

Mount Si High School’s volleyball team is off to another raging start. The Wildcats have quickly put together a 5-0 league record to begin the season. The team’s overall record is 9-1.

For the past three seasons, the Wildcats have cruised through the regular season, but faltered in the state tournament.

This year, coach Bonnie Foote said she thinks her players can win it all.

The team’s best finish was last year’s sixth-place finish. Mount Si beat Lakes and Camas in the first and quarterfinal rounds, then lost to Bishop Blanchet in the semifinal round. Prairie beat the team in the consolation round.

Five returning starters anchor the varsity squad for Mount Si: Zoe Gogan, Amanda Gates, Aubrey Larion, Sarah McDonald and Erika Clark.

Snoqualmie Valley Hospital Foundation hits a hole-in-one with golf fundraiser

September 29, 2010

The Snoqualmie Valley Hospital Foundation’s Golf for Health Tournament was a success despite overcast skies.

There were scattered sprinkles, but the weather held long enough for 32 golfers to shoot nine holes at Cascade Golf Course in North Bend.

The Sept. 10 fundraiser raised about $8,000 for the foundation after expenses.

This year was the first time the event was held.

Sponsorship slots were nearly sold out, according to Jim Schaffer, president of the foundation’s board of directors.

More than 20 businesses and organizations sponsored the event.

“We’re going to do it again next year,” when it might be expanded to 18 holes, Schaffer said.

Money raised from the event will be used in the foundation’s mission to improve the health of Snoqualmie Valley Hospital District, and to support the district’s patients and employees.

NEW — 4:00 p.m. Sept. 28, 2010

King County Metro Transit is reducing service to Snoqualmie Valley as part of the agency’s fall service changes, which begin Oct. 2.

Metro is cutting Route 209’s earliest westbound trip, which currently leaves North Bend at 4:35 a.m. for Issaquah.

Metro is also eliminating one morning and one evening trip for Route 214, which operates between Issaquah and Seattle.

The changes are part of Metro’s efforts to save money, maintain bus service and operate more efficiently, according to a news release from the agency. The trip reductions were chosen to minimize disruption to riders as much as possible.

September 27, 2010

NEW — 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27, 2010

The North Bend City Council decided to let a nine-month building moratorium on areas in the city’s eastern end expire after adopting changes to existing ordinances that will more specifically define how the area can grow.

The changes passed at the council’s Sept. 21 meeting restrict warehouses and require any expansion of the area’s truck stop to address the increased impact on North Bend. The restrictions on warehouses are designed to prevent the development of large buildings with few jobs.

“We wanted to bring businesses to town that were also going to bring jobs,” City Administrator Duncan Wilson said.
