Tucker, O’Brien for District Court judges

October 13, 2010

Few voters know just who to vote for when it comes to judicial candidates on their ballot. The closer to home, the more important the vote is; these are the judges you may very well meet for traffic tickets to misdemeanors.

The ballots this year include four choices for the two District Court positions in the Northeast Division. Both of our recommended choices — Donna Tucker and John O’Brien — are preferred for the diversity of experience they bring to the job.

Tucker and Larry Mitchell are vying for Position 7.

Hobby has Jennifer Holt high on life

October 13, 2010

The first time Jennifer Holt picked up a pencil, she was 5.

The first time Jennifer Holt picked up the vibe that people thought of her as an artist, she was shocked.

Jennifer Holt poses in front of some of her work, which is on display this month at Koko Beans Coffeehouse in Snoqualmie. By Sebastian Moraga

This despite her art minor in college and the fact that she had not stopped loving art since the days when she told people her age by saying “this many.”

“I always thought being an artist was for other people,” said Holt, whose first exhibit of drawings runs until Oct. 30 at Koko Beans Coffeehouse in Snoqualmie, 8010 Railroad Ave. S.E. “Someone glamorous, someone who lives in a loft.”

Holt has no loft, but she has friends and a husband who kept telling her she was good enough to someday have her own show.

RE: Church expands to accommodate growing congregation

Three cheers for St. Clare’s and the Rev. Patti Baker!

As a former active bishop of this diocese I made a number of visitations to St. Clare’s.

They were always a warm and welcoming household of faith. It is good to see them continue that, but also gratifying that they are back in the mission mode of church life.

Many blessings to all of you and those who are supporting you.

The Rt. Rev. Sandy Hampton

Diocese of Oregon

Academy gets new fire truck

October 13, 2010

The Port of Seattle’s Fire Department has donated a fire truck to the North Bend-based Washington State Patrol Fire Training Academy.

The truck has already exceeded its service life but despite its good condition it can no longer be used by the port’s fire squad, said Randy Krause, chief of the port’s fire department.

“This truck still has a life in training,” he said. “It’s still functional and can still serve its purpose.”

The truck, the port’s website stated, is a 1992 Oshkosh truck specially built for aircraft firefighting. It was purchased new by the port and can carry 3,000 gallons of water on board, 500 pounds of dry chemical, 400 gallons of foam and can shoot water while moving, something normal fire trucks can’t do.

Learn about Northwest noir at the library

October 13, 2010

The wild Pacific Northwest can pull at any artist’s imagination, whether that artist is a painter, writer, photographer or unsuspecting hiker.

The region’s gloomy winters, dense forests, rugged mountains and deep Puget Sound act as an ideal backdrop for mysteries, thrillers, UFO sightings and legends. Ask any “Twin Peaks” fan who has visited the Snoqualmie Valley, or any “Twilight” reader who has journeyed to Forks to see the setting of the novels detailing the lives of vampires and werewolves.

Susan Olds reads a spooky mystery novel “Breach of Duty” by J.A. Jance, a good example of Northwest noir literature. Contributed

North Bend art historian Susan Olds will present “Northwest Noir: Mysteries, Legends and Landscapes” from 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the North Bend Library, 115 E. Fourth St.

Her talk will delve into American Indian legends and art, Sasquatch sightings and stories, and unexplained mysteries, as well as contemporary art and novels set in the Northwest.

New middle school ritual is patriotism

October 13, 2010

A tradition of patriotism is growing at Snoqualmie Middle School

Every Friday since the start of school, children have begun the day with the Pledge of Allegiance and a patriotic song.

The idea came to school band director Dean Snavely during a trip with some students to Washington, D.C.

Shaye Hodgins and Karis Barnes sing ‘America The Beautiful’ early Oct. 1. By Sebastian Moraga

“The driver of the bus led us on the pledge and a patriotic song,” he said. “Made me realize that kids didn’t know their patriotic songs well at all.”

So far, the children have sung “America The Beautiful,” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and “America,” the latter also known as “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”

Besides the children’s supposed lack of musical knowledge, Snavely’s idea fights an even more powerful nemesis: the clock. Singing time is at 7:20 each morning.
