[Ed. note: Sophia Rouches was misidentified in the photo in an earlier version of this article.]The Wildcats squared off with the Liberty Patriots Oct. 14, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Mount Si is now 4-5-1 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play. Liberty remains undefeated in conference play.
Mount Si senior forward Hailey Conway put the Wildcats ahead at the 9-minute mark with a goal, thanks to an assist by senior defender Haley Chase.
Mount Si head coach Darren Brown said the early goal prompted the Patriots to pick up the pace.
“When we scored in the ninth minute, we knew Liberty would be coming at us like a storm,” he said. “And they did. They applied a lot of pressure.”
The Wildcats counteracted Liberty with its 4-4-2 flood formation, which applies heavy defensive pressure, also with the forwards.
Brown said Conway and Chase both played well throughout the game, and Chase helped keep Liberty’s dangerous offense neutralized.
“She just played a pivotal role shutting down two of their strikers,” Brown said about Chase.
At the 60-minute mark, Liberty struck back with a goal to tie the game, which Brown said led Liberty to step up the intensity even higher. This, he said, is when senior goalkeeper Carly Weidenbach shined, making critical saves to end the game with a tie.
Brown said junior midfielder Laura Barnes was also a crucial element for the Wildcats, quickly attacking and turning the ball up field.
“She got on the ball very quickly, and she was very, very effective for us,” Brown said.
