For Snoqualmie Elementary School students, most dressed in Seattle Seahawks colors, the smiles went long.
Dressed in Seahawks gear himself, tight end John Carlson visited the school Oct. 26, to the thrill of many children.
The school won a National Football League $10,000 grant for physical education, and earned the right to host Carlson, a product of Indiana’s University of Notre Dame.
Notre Dame’s fight song welcomed Carlson into the school’s gym — children cheered and high-fived him.
Carlson asked children to stay active, not because it’s important for one’s health but because it’s fun.
“You can’t just sit on the couch all day,” he said. “If that’s all you do, you get sick.”
North Bend and Snoqualmie consider joint police department
October 27, 2010
NEW — 9:40 a.m. Oct. 27, 2010
North Bend is considering contracting with Snoqualmie for police services, which are currently provided by the King County Sheriff’s Office. A joint department could offer the city substantial savings.
After hearing a presentation from Snoqualmie Police Chief Jim Schaffer, the North Bend City Council voted Oct. 19 to tell the county that it is considering ending its contract.
The county and city have 45 days to discuss the contract. After that period, the City Council could vote to terminate the contract, which requires an 18-month notice.
City officials have become increasingly concerned about the rising costs of its 28-year relationship with the sheriff’s office.

With snowfall forecast for mountain passes Monday and Tuesday, the Washington State Department of Transportation says drivers can start using studded tires.
Snow levels are forecast to drop to 3,000 feet. Interstate 90 goes through Snoqualmie Pass at 3,022 feet. WSDOT’s website said two to four inches of slush or wet snow are forecast for Snoqualmie Pass.
The seasonal restriction typically ends Nov. 1.
North Bend Planning Commission to host workshop on shoreline updates
October 23, 2010
NEW — 6:00 a.m. Oct. 23, 2010
North Bend’s Planning Commission is holding a public workshop on updating the city’s Shoreline Master Program. The workshop starts at 6 p.m Oct. 28, Mount Si Senior Center, 411 Main Ave. S., North Bend.
The Shoreline Master Program affects potential uses allowed in shoreline areas, including economic development, public access and recreation, conservation, education and cultural resources, and protection of the environment.
The city is required by law to update its Shoreline Master Program by 2011. To be adopted, it must be approved by both the Washington State Department of Ecology and North Bend City Council. Ecology is providing money for the updating process.
Information on the program is available on the city’s website, www.ci.north-bend.wa.us, under the main page “News, Events, and Highlights” section. For further questions, contact Jamie Burrell at 425-888-7642 o jburrell@northbendwa.gov.
