Si View Metro Park District receives high bond rating, saving taxpayers money

December 2, 2010

Si View Metropolitan Park District received high marks from Standard & Poor’s, a national credit rating agency, which should lower the amount of interest it will have to pay on $6.7 million in bonds the district is preparing to issue.

Voters approved the bonds in the Aug. 17 election. The bonds will pay for capital improvements and refinance existing debt.

Standard & Poor’s gave the district a bond rating of AA, one of the highest ratings possible. The major rating agencies, including Standard & Poor’s, have been heavily criticized in the past year for being too lenient in evaluating private companies, but the criticisms have not included their ratings of government agencies.

North Bend gets money to fight invasive plants at Tollgate Farm

December 2, 2010

The Tollgate Farm and the banks of the South Fork of the Snoqualmie River are under attack. The invaders? English ivy and other non-native plant species that push out native species and alter the local ecosystems.

North Bend is fighting back with help from the King Conservation District and Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust. The city received a $40,000 grant from the district. The city has agreed to contract with the Greenway Trust to manage the project. The trust has donated $10,000 in-kind to the work.

Earlier this year, the city received $12,000 from the district to remove English ivy around Tollgate and the South Fork, and to plant spruce trees.

The work will focus on 103 acres along either side of the South Fork around where the Snoqualmie Valley Trail passes over the river.

After finishing fourth in the state tournament last year, Mount Si High School’s gymnastics team faces a tougher road this season.

Two of the team’s top three gymnasts — Georgia Reynolds and Rachel Karavias — graduated. The remaining gymnast, senior and co-captain Kennedy Richmond, will lead the team, which expects to remain competitive.

“I think we’re going to be just as strong” as last season, coach Jessica Easthope said. “We did lose two strong competitors, but the girls from last year are stronger and more experienced.”

The team has several key pieces returning this year and a few new faces with lots of promise.

Richmond is the team’s strongest and most experienced gymnast. She’s also a one-woman cheer squad, constantly shouting encouragement to her teammates in practice.

She and co-captain Tandi Duvall provide leadership for a young team.

Junior Lexi Swanson also returns. Last year, she was one of the team’s top scorers.
