Mount Si’s 3-2 win over Kamiakin to advance to the 3A state baseball championship game came down to a play at the plate.

With one out and a runner on third, Kamiakin’s Joey Jansen hit a fly ball to left fielder Daniel Besmer, who made the catch. At third, Jonny Allen tagged the base and took off for home, hoping to tie the game at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Sinner fired the ball to catcher Robb Lane, who was blocking home plate. Allen barreled into Lane, knocking him over — and knocking the ball loose.

SOFTBALL | Mount Si beats Wilson in extra innings to advance in state playoffs

Mount Si’s softball squad upset Wilson High School in an extra innings duel Friday morning to advance in the state 3A playoffs. The Wildcats beat Wilson 8-7 in nine innings.

A misstep cost Wilson the game. Trailing by one run and with two outs, Wilson’s Taylor Clark hit a double, but as she stood up, she took her foot off the bag. The Mount Si player applied the tag to close the game.

The Mount Si Wildcats will face a tough opponent when they take the field at 1 p.m. Friday against the Kamiakin Braves in the state semifinals. The game could turn on pitching and baserunning. 

Kamiakin (22-5) has a potent lineup that proved itself in the tough CBBN 3A conference. The team has six players hitting .400 or above. Junior Drew Oord is the Braves’ top hitter, with a .541 avg. He rarely swings and misses, and has only three strikeouts this season. He can also hit to all fields.

The Braves ace, Garrett Anderson, has dominated opponents this season. He holds a 2.24 ERA and has racked up 11 wins in his 13 starts. The 6-foot-4 senior has 82 strikeouts and 25 walks.
