They looked big but they turned out small.
Two accidents occurred the afternoon of Jan. 18 on Interstate 90 marring what was otherwise an uneventful day of traffic amid heavy snow on the interstate.
The first accident occurred at about1:36 p.m. at milepost 34 in North Bend. A truck carrying tomatoes jacknifed in the westbound lanes and crashed against a guardrail.
“It was a significant collision. It tore everything apart,” said Trooper Julie Startup, spokeswoman for the WSP.
The driver had only minor injuries, but the accident blocked traffic for about 90 minutes while a tow truck large enough to handle a semi was summoned to the scene.
The accident is still under investigation, Startup said. At this time, troopers believe the truck traveled too fast for the road conditions.
Then, at about 3:15 p.m., the interstate witnessed another scary but ultimately harmless incident, when a small slide high-centered a car near milepost 47, about 12 miles east of North Bend.
Astate Fish and Wildlife agent came across the accident first, and described it as a one-vehicle accident, where the slide lifted the driver’s side of the car.
The two people inside the car, a man and a woman, were not hurt, Startup said. The road reopened within an hour.
Though the snowstorm hit all of Puget Sound, south King County got hit much harder than the east, Startup said.
The two accidents do stand out, but overall, drivers on I-90 had no major trouble, she said.
“People have been successful getting through there,” she said. “People there are better prepared for snow conditions and traffic was lighter.”
