Mabel Mackey, longtime resident of Carnation, passed away April 5, 2012, at the age of 95.

Born to Alfred and Linda Riley in Maytown on March 15, 1917, her family moved to the Snoqualmie Valley in 1927, settling in Stillwater. She graduated in 1934 from Tolt Union High School, where she played girls’ first-team basketball.

Mabel M. Mackey

After working at the Colonial Inn in Fall City, she headed far north to Cordova, Alaska, where she met her future husband Oliver Mackey, who was fishing commercially in Bristol Bay. They were married Oct. 15, 1938, and welcomed daughter Jeanie in July 1939 before moving to Naknek. In 1945, they returned to Carnation and remained in the Valley.

Active in community affairs, Mabel was a member of the Carnation Sportsman Club, Tolt Congregational Church and a life member of the Sno-Valley Senior Center. A charter member of the Tolt Historical Society, she was its secretary for 19 years.

She always attended annual Pioneer Picnics and later Tolt High School reunions. An especially dear circle of friends formed the Sew What Club, to which she belonged until its disbanding. In the mid-1950s, she took a job as a checker at Paar’s IGA Store in Carnation.

Traveling was another enjoyment — trips with Oliver to Mexico, Australia, Europe, Hawaii, California and Las Vegas. On their first trip to Finland, they were accompanied by daughter Jeanie, while a second visit in 1988 was to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Their last excursion to Alaska was when Oliver received an award from the Bristol Bay Historical Society.

She and Oliver had 67 years of marriage before his death in 2006 and she remained independently in their home until just before her final birthday.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband Oliver; sisters Ruth Ann Anderson, Norma Paar and Joyce Anderson; and brothers Lenvil, Leon, Chet and Jack.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Jeanie and Fritz Magdlin, of North Bend; grandsons Mark Magdlin (Lynn), of Preston, and Alec Magdlin (Kristy), of Ellensburg; great-granddaughters Samantha, Sabrina and Nicole; sister Geneva Dodge, of San Mateo, Calif.; brothers Ralph Riley, of Snoqualmie, and Sam Riley, of North Bend; and many nieces and nephews.

She has asked that any memorials in her name be directed to the Tolt Historical Society, Box 226, Carnation, WA 98014.

The family’s online guest book is at www.fllntofts.com.

Florence was born Feb. 22, 1926, in North Bend, to Ben and Gladys Young. She graduated from Snoqualmie High School and was the class salutatorian for the class of 1943.

On Feb. 1, 1947, she married Bob Vezzoni in Snoqualmie. They settled in Snoqualmie, where they raised three children.

Florence attended ITT Business College after graduating from high school. She worked for Washington State Bank, now known as Bank of America. She also worked as a teletype operator at Weyerhaeuser from 1965 to 1983. While Bob was away during the war, she worked at the Veterans of Foreign Wars and volunteered with the USO Committed Service Organization. She felt that it was a way to stay close to Bob while helping her community and country.

Florence belonged to a bowling league while working at Weyerhaeuser. She loved to sing, sew and golf, and she was a wonderful cook. After taking painting classes with her sister, Adaline, she painted many wonderful pictures. The family has many of her beautiful pictures to remember and cherish. Later on in life, Florence greatly enjoyed babysitting her two granddaughters and it brought her great joy to be able to share all of her wonderful hobbies together with them.

Florence also loved family vacations — it could be going to a favorite destination in Eastern Washington, visiting the ocean, or traveling to Canada or Hawaii. The family has many beautiful and treasured memories of these special times together.

Florence always agreed with her husband Bob that they were blessed to live near their family on the blueberry farm — it was like living in paradise every day, for the family as well. She had a very gentle, but quiet, strength about her. She was a good listener and always gave the best advice.

Florence would always put the needs of others before her own and always provided a strong support system. We all will remember how beautiful, generous, giving, caring and loving she was to all her family and friends. Florence deeply cherished every moment with her family, her husband, her sister, her great-granddaughter Makenna and her very special family cat Zorro, who was a great comfort to her during the past few years.

Florence is survived by her children Michael Robert Vezzoni, of Seattle, Jayne Marie (Steve) Bybee, of North Bend, and John Eugene Vezzoni, of North Bend; her sister Adaline Lane, of Kirkland; granddaughters Kelli (Tom) Berlin, of North Bend, and Michelle Bybee of Issaquah; great-granddaughter Makenna Berlin; and a host of extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Bob, who passed away in 2010.

Every time a rainbow appears in front of beautiful Mount Si on the farm, it will be a promise from Florence to her family that she is now home, happy and healthy in the loving arms of the Lord with her beloved husband Bob. Florence will forever be deeply missed and dearly loved always.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Eastside Fire & Rescue, Snoqualmie Valley Alliance Church or Snoqualmie Valley Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 30, at Fall City Cemetery, 4713 Lake Alice Road S.E., Fall City, WA.

Arrangements are entrusted to Flintoft’s Funeral Home and Crematory.

Friends are invited to view photos, get directions and share memories in the family online guestbook at www.flintofts.com.

Lois G. Nelson, 92, died March 28, 2012, in Yakima. She has joined her parents James Edward and Gladys A. (Benson) Dodge and siblings Dick, Max and Laurel.

Mom was the glue that kept the family informed, counseled and loved. She was very special, a good example of being a daughter, wife, mom, aunt, grandma, great-grandma and friend.

Mom was very beautiful, although she didn’t know it; everyone else did! We were never in danger of having too much money, but were rich in the things that mattered most, largely due to that overflowing fountain of LOVE named Lois. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Lois is survived by her sons Marc and Russell; three blessings, her granddaughters Wendy, Michelle and Erika; and four great-grandchildren, Marcus, Kobe, Dayton and Jade.

Memorial services were held April 14 at the Community of Christ Church, 330 McGonagle Road, Selah.

Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory, Yakima, was entrusted with the arrangements.

She enjoyed taking the “Riverbend Kids” to Lake Easton and Rattlesnake Lake for days of swimming. On weekends and during the summer, it was off to Ocean Shores to do donuts on the beach or go camping at Blewitt Pass. In the winter, after sledding in the snow, she spoiled us all with her famous hot cocoa.

Mom Candy was mainly known for her “crazy sticker truck”, being surrounded by “her” kids and her love of animals. I would like to thank everyone for the part you played in her life, whether it was giving her credit at the Drug Center for her Wednesday magazines, letting your kids hang out with her, taping something up on the wall on your way out of the house, or just saying hi. Thank You!

James Michael McKiernan, son of Jim and Karen McKiernan, former owners of the Snoqualmie Valley Record, passed away early Sunday morning, Dec. 4, in Pasco.

James was a 2006 graduate of Mount Si High School, along with his father (1980), mother (1984) and sister (1988). He is also a graduate of Central Washington University, walking in commencement in June 2011. He had recently been hired by Connell Grain Growers in Connell as a seed broker and was living in Pasco.

James McKiernan

James was an avid fishermen, fly fishing being his passion, and had been know to take a few shots at passing deer and even an occasional coyote.

If you are a fan of Mount Si football you will remember him as the small center on the 2005 team who was not afraid to take on a nose tackle twice his size while hiking the ball to his good friend Rollin Smith.

His latest fun came from stirring up the world of seed sales for Connell Grain Growers and furnishing his new house with anything his parents were willing to give up.

James touched many lives in his short 23 years and will be remembered for his unwavering smile, flipping off his dad for taking too many pictures, begging his mother to bring down food and prodding his sister to keep her grades up at Central.

Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, at noon, in the Mount Si High School Auditorium and will be officiated by Pastor Monty Wright. A graveside service will be held afterwards at the Fall City cemetery and a reception back at the Mount Si High School Commons.

Those wishing to post their thoughts and photos may do so on Jim McKiernan’s Facebook page.

James is survived by his mother Karen, father Jim, sister Lynnae, grandmother Avon Barquist, grandparents Bob and Sandie Scott, and grandmother Patricia McKiernan. He is also survived by numerous cousins, uncles, aunts and hundreds of friends.

Donations are suggested to the James McKiernan memorial scholarship fund at Mount Si High School.
