Awards honor those who shine

Posted on June 16, 2010March 4, 2025 by Staff

Every year, dozens of people in the upper and lower Snoqualmie Valley are nominated for Rise and Shine Awards, given by the Snoqualmie Valley Community Network.

The network honored about 50 people at its 14th annual award ceremony June 3. Below are some of the recipients from the upper Valley. To see the full list, visit www.snoqualmievalleycommunitynetwork.org.

Mount Si High School Senior Anna Sprouse passionately serves Key Club, Natural Helpers and Honor Society, demonstrating empathy, trust, fellowship and service and advocating for funding local programs.

North Bend Police Chief Mark Toner secured a new drop box for narcotics at the station and implements compliance checks to make sure minors are not buying alcohol or tobacco.

Mary Lloyd, of Fall City, volunteers at a local preschool.

Paul Tredway, of North Bend, the president of Kiwanis, leads the annual fireworks sale, pancake breakfast, swap meet, Santa luncheons and helps with Key Club, the Mt Si Senior Center, local schools, Rotary, the chamber of commerce, Eastside Baby Corner and the Tour de Peaks Bicycle event.

Cindy and Jim Walker have supported community events at their North Bend Theatre, including Encompass’ Respectful giving program, monthly Special Needs Matinees, The North Bend Block Party, Banana Boogie race, Casino Night and free Date Night benefit.

Sonja and JR Stevens, of Snoqualmie, volunteer at Encompass.

Cliff Brown, of Snoqualmie, led the Snoqualmie Valley School District 2010 levy campaign, worked on the school boundary review committee and served as Cascade View Elementary School president.

Lesli Williams founded Snoqualmie Valley Women In Business in 2008, and served as its first president. Now, WIB has more than 70 members and helps businesswomen network.

A group of people — Kari Carlson, Chris Pavek, Gary Davis, Roger Thorson, Heidi Bohan, Nancy Wallace, Patti Burdick, Maxine Walker and Elaine Harger — initiated a movement in the Valley to address climate change and peak oil, and engaged more than 100 people in the discussion.

Sherri Zucker, of Ames Lake, volunteered at the Chief Kanim Middle School Library so she and other volunteers could keep it open the four days a week a librarian was not present, due to budget cuts.

Steve Rackets, of Snoqualmie, and Charlotte Jacobs, of North Bend, worked as a team on community building, outreach and fundraising with the chamber of commerce. Rackets served as chair of Tour de Peaks, and Jacobs chaired the Festival at Mt. Si.

Terry Granillo serves as umpire in chief for the Snoqualmie Valley Little League and is a member of its board. He recruits, trains and manages all the volunteer umpires for all the games, mentoring and handling scheduling problems, complaints and demands while umpiring himself.

Ted Crane volunteers in the SVSD school libraries and at KCLS libraries teaching students how to play chess.

Sean Sundwall, of Snoqualmie, organizes fun runs for the community.

Encompass thanked a number of its volunteers, including Brook Starnes, Gwen Berry, Zach Sletten and Kathy Lessley.
